A no-brainer if you like offal, pasta, meat, soup, salumi, salads, seafood, antipasto, olives……oh hang on. They’ve got food, is my point. But it is fabulous, authentic Italian food, not to be confused with dead Southbank food. The spaghetti arrabbiata baked in a bag with crab, tomato and chilli is the hands down favourite for many. For the rest of us, it’s the bistecca fiorentina, an 800 gram T-bone Angus monster served with salsa erbe and spuds. Perfectly quaffable house plonk comes in carafes, a lovely long-lost tradition. The fresh raspberry, rose-flavoured grappa and vanilla mascarpone tart is a stunner of a finale.
GAS is another one of those restaurants where lighting is dimmed to the point of non-existence, but it somehow works for this Italian dame and her provocative display of of hung salumi.
Must try: The fresh raspberry, rose-flavoured grappa and vanilla mascarpone tart
